Build Teachers and Communities Capacity

Inadequate number of teachers well-trained and motivated to teach children with disabilities is identified as a significant barrier to quality disability inclusive education. Also, prevalence of negative cultural practices and attitudes and poor support for children with disabilities in the families, communities and in schools prevent children with disabilities from accessing and remaining in education system. Families of children with disabilities significantly lack the support they need not during school enrollment for their children with disabilities but also in provision of appropriate daily care.

In collaboration with other stakeholders, FAE endeavors to address the existing challenges and barriers to disability inclusive education through strengthening teachers and communities’ capacity. This shall be through training adequate number of teachers, empowering parents/caregivers, starting a network of businesses and possible future employers of people with disabilities and developing a resource team of community and school volunteers/disability support workers. The resource team shall be trained to provide help to children with disabilities at homes as well as at schools. In doing so, the negative attitude towards the education of children with disabilities is expected to be dismantled.
