Why we exist

The Foundation for African Empowerment  (FAE) is dedicated to changing the lives of the most marginalized children and young people including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Tanzania and beyond so that they can reach their full potential and thrive in their communities.

We work in underserved, often completely overlooked communities that other organizations miss. This means FAE can make a huge impact. FAE is working with these communities and partners to keep children safe and support their wellbeing and development through increasing their access to quality disability inclusive education, quality healthcare and nutrition; safe water, hygiene and sanitation; women economic empowerment, ending child violence, and expanding awareness and advocacy.

Children and young people are the majority but many of them face numerous challenges including poverty and injustices that effect their welfare and development. The situation is even worse for the most vulnerable children such as those with SEND. Children with SEND, for example, they are the majority among children out of school in Africa. These individuals are excluded because of poor education system and society support, and therefore denied their right to an education.

They are often the most stigmatized, discriminated and excluded segment of students in the education system, as well as other aspects of society. They are also the most vulnerable to violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation. Excluding them from realizing their right to education and training makes them more likely to be living in poverty today and in the future. FAE is therefore fighting for a world where all children and young people including those with SEND are valued, included, protected and supported to access education and other rights so that they can have a better life.

In order to empower and change lives of the most vulnerable children and young people, FAE’s work cover parents/caregivers who are primarily responsible to ensure children are prevented from violence and provided with their basic rights. This forms the core of who we are and what we do daily. We value the lives of the most vulnerable children and young people. We exist because they exist. We take great pleasure in helping to empower and change their lives.

Numbers are mainly for the academic understanding of the situation. To better understand what it means to be a child and young person with disabilities, Imagine

  • Being treated and perceived as a person without value.
  • Being stigmatized and discriminated in many aspects of social life.
  • Being excluded in the mainstream education system.
  • Being the most vulnerable to violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.

…and the list goes on and on
