A Snapshot of Enjoro Maasai Community

Enjoro Maasai Community is an underserved poor rural community in Arusha Rural District about 45km from Arusha town. It is situated on the hills of the ancient volcanic eruption of Mount Meru. It is a homogenous pure maasai community. Residents of this community practice smallholder farming and livestock keeping. Total population is estimated at 2,138 people in which 716 are men and 1,422 are women.

Why we chose Enjoro Maasai Community

Results from a preliminary participatory community assessment show that this Maasai community has tremendous needs in terms of improving access to education for all children including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).This community identified access to education as their number one priority. Due to acute shortage of learning and teaching infrastructure, children particularly those with SEND are the most affected. Despite their desire and right to education, children with SEND are still kept at home since the school infrastructure cannot accommodate them. The school has 3 complete and 2 semi-complete classrooms which are shared by 824 students making a ration of 1 classroom to 165 students while the standard ratio is 1:45. The school is urgently in need of 13 new classrooms.

Current Projects

Classrooms Building

In collaboration with Gulf for Good, FAE is working to build additional classrooms in order to improve access to education for all children including those with SEND. We aim to enable more than 200 pupils who are currently sitting under a tree during study hours to have classrooms. Gulf for Good are organizing a Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge to raise funds for building the classrooms. You can read more about the challenge here and how you can be involved. You can also view a new video here for the campaign to raise funds.
