Improve school buildings and infrastructure

Evidence shows that buildings and infrastructure in most regular public and private schools in Tanzania are unsafe, inadequately equipped and inaccessible to children with disabilities. These include classrooms, desks, playground, walkways, and hygiene and sanitation facilities. Further, lack of disability-friendly sports and games infrastructure makes it impossible for children with disabilities to participate in sports and games. Games and sports are important not only in improving their quality of life but also in changing the negative community and school perception towards the ability of children with disabilities. Unfriendly school buildings and infrastructure are serious barriers that contribute to making parents of children with disabilities reluctant to take their children to school. Often times, the enrolled-lucky ones drop out of school before completion due to disability-unfriendly buildings and infrastructure. These challenges point to the need for interventions customized to address infrastructure issues in schools in Tanzania.

FAE intends to change the situation by supporting schools in the improvement of school buildings and infrastructure in order to make them safe and disability-sensitive for the attainment of quality inclusive education. This includes promoting availability of sports and games facilities that are disability participative as a way of fighting negative attitudes towards the ability of children with disabilities.
